the result you are gonna get! don't evyou ever talk to me. >> who's talking about you? >> crabtree! >> he's a tv guy. i don't talk. good play. >> sherman has been in a dispute in recent weeks. the two were pushing and shoving the entire game. a large crowd of loyal fans stayed up late to welcome the 49ers home. alex savidge is live from the team headquarters. >> reporter: these certainly are dedicated fans. outside of the team facility, you can see a small group of fans standing outside of the facility. they are waiting until they pull in for the team meeting. the 49ers wrapping up a great season but it ended with that

painful loss last night. as the players and coaches arrived home from seattle, late last night, they were greeted by a huge group of very proud fans. [ cheers ] >> reporter: pretty good-sized crowd. close to 2009er fans lined the streets outside of headquarters. this was after 11:30. the crowd erupted in applause as the team bus pulled in just back from seattle after that difficult 23-17 loss to the rival seahawks in the nfc title game. as the players and coaches drove out of the facility, some of emthis waved to the crowd. even though the team couldn't get back to the super bowl this year, they certainly played tough. fans say this believe this team has what it takes to win that sixth championship. they appreciate the effort all season. >> thanks for fighting your hearts out. everybody did a great job from the first guy to the 53rd good

to the locker room guys, to the head coach, jim harbaugh. all did a great job. >> reporter: despite colin kaepernick's interception late in the game that sealed the victory for the seahawks, many people still think he's the right quarterback to lead the 49ers to another championship. the road to that potential next title will begin here at the new levi stadium as we bring you back out here to a live picture. this is where the 49ers will deginn to play next -- begin to play next season. they will hold a team meeting at 11:00 and then players and coaches will address the media and talk about what a fantastic season that ended with a frustrating loss last night. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> those last few minutes put a damper on viewing parties across san francisco. ktvu's cameras were near at&t where there are several sports bars. all of them were parked. one manager at pedro's cantina

said he had to turn people away. he said the crowd kept it under control, especially when the game took a turn for the worse. >> we made it this far for the past two years. look forward to next year. people make mistakes. that one mistake, bad. >> bad is right. san francisco police were making regular stops at those sports bars. if the 49ers had run, police were ready. they say after last year's championship win, fans started fires and vandalized a muni bus. coming up in 15 minute, the steps the police and city took to make sure nothing happened after yesterday's game. the seahawks, meantime, will face the denver broncos. it may have been the last postseason matchup for tom brady and paytop manning.

the broncos went on to win, 26- 15. payton manning and the bronk course became the highest- scoring team in nfl history this season. >> we have more on the 49ers on our website, including a lot of fan photos. go to ktvu.com and don't forget you can watch the super bowl right here on channel 2 sunday, february 2nd. a frightening situation for people in a san jose neighborhood after a plan threatened to burn down a home. that man is now it -- is now in custody. janine de la vega has details you will only see on 2. >> reporter: tori, police say it was intense for a while because the man was holding gasoline containers. police also thought he may have had access to weapons. they wanted to make sure they kept people safe. after 20 minutes or so, officers finally got their man.

now here's exclusive video showing the suspect that police took in custody. you can tell him yelling in pain. this all started as police were called to reagan at around 11:30 last night. after people say the man was threatening to use gasoline to burn down the property. when officers arrived, they found the man barricaded himself into a shed in the back of the home. he was holding a woman there against her will. police started to negotiate with them and the woman was able to escape. he lit the shed on fire. >> they were trying to negotiate and get him out, he lit the shed on fire and was engulfed. he eventually came out, resisted. officers had to use some force to take him into custody. >> reporter: firefighters were able to extinguish the fire which only damaged the shed. police tased the 34-year-old suspect and using k-9s to capture him. he was arrested and taken to the hospital with minor

injuries. he's being interviewed there. he will face charges of resisting arrest and arson. he also had outstanding warrants. it's unknown what the suspect's motive was or if he knew the people who lived in the main house. people were evacuated for safety reasons. but everybody is now safe and back in their houses. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. police want to know what caused a crash that killed a man in hayward. it happened last night on industrial parkway near interstate 880 about 7:30. police say the man was driving erratically, changing lanes and possibly speeding when he went off the road and crashed into a light pole. he was not wearing a seat belt. if you have any information about this, call the police. happening today -- all over the country, people will take part in parades marches and community service projects honoring dr. martin luther king, junior. want to show you some video of a wreath-laying ceremony

made a deal with the university of minnesota to play home games at its stadium. 7:24. san francisco police were braced. ready for anything during yesterday's nfc championship game but there were few prob problems after the -- few problems after the 49ers' loss. police increased patrols and they were watching mission district street corners. police say fan violence has been a problem in that area especially when people have been drinking. >> there's a lot of people that have been having a good time all day long. there's always gonna be something we have to deal with at the end of the day. >> san francisco police arrested a handful of people for public intoxication and for fighting. it was a party in seattle. seahawk fans celebrating in the streets, celebrating their team's win. you can see they are just

thrilled. their team is headed to a second bole. the oddsmakers in las vegas think this year's super bowl game is one of the most evenly matched title games ever. but the early betters are putting their money on denver. now sports books around nevada are making the broncos a two- point favorite no matter how much the score, oddsmakers will probably be the big winner themselves. more people are expected to vote on this super bowl than any other pro game ever. with two weeks to go before the super bowl, fox sports is getting ready. workers are building a huge television set. look at this. this is right in times square. it will be used a week leading up to the game and also on super bowl. there's also a set being built at metlife stadium, where the game will be played. the game is sunday, february

good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." a rare winter burn ban in effect in some bay area counties this morning. coming up in just a few minutes we'll have the extra help that calfire has onhand today as these very, very dry conditions continue to plague this state. i tell you, we drove out to bodega bay. there's eucalyptus trees that have dead, brown leaves. unusual sight. we'll keep talking about that, unfortunately.

the district on foot. organizers say tickets for the freedom train have been slow the last couple of years. so this may be the train's last year. 7:33. vice president joe biden just finished speaking at an event in washington, d.c. honoring dr. martin luther king, junior. the vice president focused most of his comments on what he called new attacks on the voting rights act. >> dr. king, if you remember, we all do, in '65 wrote from the jail, he said, voting is the foundation stone for political action. >> vice president biden said once the voting rights act was passed, he naively thought the matter was settled. he said he can't believe people have to fight again to make sure the right to vote is guaranteed for everybody. calfire issued winter burn bans for three north bay

counties. allie rasmus joins us from petaluma with more on what is being banned and why. >> reporter: well, about 15 minutes ago, i got off the phone with one of the fire captains at their petaluma station. he says he's worked for calfire during the last 14 years. during that time, he cannot remember the time the agency issued a burn ban in the middle of winter. this is the reason why. you can see evidence in petaluma of the dry conditions all around us. this burn ban is in effect for sonoma, napa and solano counties. it went into effect at midnight. residents are not allowed to burn leaves or vegetation. this concerns vineyards. calfire officials are concerned about fire. the agency has an extra 125 seasonal firefighters onhand in the northern region which extends from the north bay all the way up to the oregon

border. they are on stand by in case a fire breaks out. the latest was a small wildfire over the weekend in a remote section of the mount tamalpais watershed. that fire burned an anchor of brush -- anchor of brush. no one was hurt. it's a reminder of the unusual fire danger we're facing this time of year. while the burn ban is new here, it's already been in effect in san mateo, alameda, santa clara, contra costa and santa cruz counties. they've had a burn ban in effect since december 30th. live in petaluma, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. fires in los angeles county, still working on a wildfire. it's about 78% contained. firefighters effect full containment by wednesday. so far it's 0 burned more than 19 -- it's burned more than 1900 acres in the angeles

national forest. investigators say an illegal camp fire started that fire. police say three men in their 20s have been arrested in connection with the fire. the drought changing the way restaurants use water. in sacramento, the restaurants there will only serve water upon request. dish washing machines will be filled before they are used. the city council voted to require residents to reduce water use by 20% to 30%. an oakland mother devastated after two of her sons were shot to death in less than a month. police say 19-year-old lamar broussard and his friend were driving toward 100th and longfellow when two gunmen opened gunfire. the men were killed at the scene. just a week before that, broussard bur you ared his brother, 13-year-old weathersby iii. he was gunned down new year's eve blocks away from home. family members are devastated.

>> now we have to deal with something like this. it's a senseless death. our family has never dealt with death like this. >> oakland police believe the men killed yesterday were targeted. the name of the second spell has not been -- victim has not been released yesterday. police in oakley are looking into a shooting that left one man dead. that happened just before noontime on norcross lane near oakley park and west ruby street. police found a 23-year-old man who had been shot in front of his home. he died there at the scene. so far, police have not told us the victim's name or any information. oakland police want to know who created fliers in an oakland neighborhood showing a city councilwoman with a swastika on her forehead. the tribune reports the fliers

vote libby shaft and stop dac. that's a police surveillance center for police and firefighters. shaft sell tells the tribune the fliers are particularly hurtful. u.s. lawmakers are very concerned about security at the sochi olympics after a newly- surfaced video that threatened an attack. about a month ago, a bus and train station were targets in a suicide bombing in the russian city of volgograd. these two men posted a video on a well-known jihadi website and they also talked about plans for the olympic games. >> they have morned some 30,000 armed troops down to the region. that tells you that their level of concern is great. but we don't seem to be getting all of the information we need to protect our athletes in the games. >> now, russia's president, vladimir putin, says he's gonna make sure the visitors are safe at the olympics.

he talked about safety measures at the g-8 and g-20. the torch has just reached the city of volgograd. that's where the suicide bombings killed more than 30 people last month. there are a lot of police present in the city. they have scattered throughout the area as the flame winds its way through the streets. by the time the relay is over, the torch will have gone through 136 cities. we're now learning the cost of the nine months of contract negotiations between b.a.r.t. management and its two biggest unions. according to the san francisco chronicle, b.a.r.t. spent about 8.4 million trying to reach an agreement. some of that was spent on consultant, negotiators and charter buses when workers went on strike. one member says they had to cave to union demandsant the money spent was not worth it. 7:40. now we're gonna take you back to san francisco. a breakfast honoring dr. martin luther king, junior on this

people getting ofrt freedom train will take that march when they deboard at 11:00 this morning. the train is going to leave san jose at 10:00 but as of friday, 300 tickets have been sold for the ride. compare that to last year's 1200 tickets. 1600 seats filled. this is a nearly 30-year tradition spearheaded by the dr. martin luther king, junior association. the trip commemorates the route that king and others marched. the san francisco freedom ride is about the same distance. the freedom train idea was started by coretta scott king. this bay area train is the last freedom train in the country. you can still buy tickets at the san jose says this morning. there are $15 round trip. the trains will not be stopping along the peninsula but will be headed straight to san

new zealand. it was a 6.3 magnitude quake rattled buildings and knocked power out to thousands of people. it was big enough to damage homes and trigger rockslides and shut down some roads. that giant eagle sculpture there from the movie, the hobbit, it fell at the country's main airport. so far no serious injuries have been reported. flu-related deaths in california may be close to matching the death toll from the flew for all of last year. the chronicle reports there have been 45 flu-related deaths under the age of 65. under 50 deaths that may have been caused by the investigation. for all of last year, there was 106 you from-re-- flu-related deaths in california. infection disease experts continue to urge people to get the flu vaccine which takes two weeks to reach full strength. free flu shots to be the first positive experience millions have with the

san francisco police made an arrest in last night's shooting that injured two

people. now, it happened on turk street about 9:00 p.m. police say one person was shot in the arm. the other was shot in the leg. both are expected to survive. police made that arrest about a block away on market street. muni services were diverted off market while the investigation took place. also oakland police are investigating a stabbing where three people were hurt. it happened before 10:30 last night on 19th avenue. police say three people were rushed to the hospital. we have no word on their condition. police say they did make one arrest in connection with the crime. right now, it's not clear what may have led up to that attack. rescue teams successfully helped 25 pilot whales get back into the gulf of mexico. now, the whales were stranded at a beach in naples, florida. it happened during low tide. at least two whales were stuck on a sandbar. while all of the whales eggs cape, scientists say the whales are sick and don't look like

they are eating. >> if someone is sick or injured, they will continue to stay with it even if it goes into a dangerous situation in the shallows like this one did. >> it's unclear what's making them sick. back in december, you may remember 40 miles away more than 50 whales got stuck in the everglades. they were stranded in shallow water for about a week. seven of those whales died and four others had to be euthanized. president obama is talking about marijuana. in an interview with a new york magazine, the president said marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol. he also called smoking pot a bad habit just like smoking cigarettes. he told the magazine, he smoked marijuana when he was younger but he does not encourage it. the reck re-- recreational marijuana is still against the law. but the obama administration

starting to show up outside of the stadium this morning. >> alex savidge joining us live from the team's headquarters. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning to you. faithful 49ers ears fans lined up here outside of the team's training facility in santa clara. here sh a look at the crowd. they are waiting for some of their favorite players to pull in here. there will be a team meets -- team meeting support for a great season. there was a huge crowd last night as the players and coaches arrived back home to san francisco. [ cheers ] close to 200 49er fans assembled last night. they erupted in applause as the team buses pulled into the training facility back from seattle after that frustrating 23-17 loss to the rival seahawks in the nfc title game.

as the players and coaches drove out of the facility, some of them waved to the crowd. even though the 49ers couldn't make it back to the super bowl, they played tough and these fans are proud. >> we just want to let them know thank you for the season. it was a great season. we'll be back stronger next year in santa clara. it's gonna be nice. we'll be strong. >> reporter: fans are urging all of these players to hold their heads up high, especially colin kaepernick, after he admitted that he -- or said that he cost the 49ers the game after throwing that late interception with less than a minute to go that essentially sealed the victory for the seahawks last night. later this morning, the 49ers will hold a team meeting scheduled for 11:00. after that, the players and coach harbaugh will talk with the media about a fantastic season that ended with frustration. live this morning in santa clara, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. there were a lot of faithful 49er fans in seattle

during yesterday's nfc championship game. they cheered on the 49ers in the centurylink field along with the very loud seahawks fans. julie haener talked to one of those brave 49er fans. >> we're so pumped and so amped. san francisco fans are amazing. everyone is rallied, everyone is so excited for this game. even though it's loud. we're being just as loud as well. >> seahawk fans are known as the 12th man. they recently got into the guinness book of world records as the loudest fans in pro football. ed lee issued this statement about the loss. he said "san francisco is proud of our hometown heroes. faithful fans all over the bay area cheered our 49ers on through the hard-fought game that went down to the wire." well the seahawks will face the denver broncos. it may have been the last postseason matchup between peyton manning and tom brady.

broncos won. manning and the broncos game the highest scoring team in nfl history this season. we have more 49er coverage on our website, including fan photos. great to see. go to ktvu.com and don't forget you can watch the super bowl right here with us, ktvu on sunday, february 2nd. 8:06. a man is in custody in san jose this morning after threatening to burn down a house. ktvu's janine de la vega has more details now on how he was captured and janine, you have video, you will see only here on channel 2. >> reporter: hey, dave. yes. police had a potentially dangerous situation on their hands. they were told that the man had gasoline containers and he had access to weapons. that prompted them to evacuate several homes and then they started negotiating with the suspect. here's that exclusive video of the 34-year-old suspect being carried from the back of the

house. now, police say they had to use a taser and a k-9 to capture him. officers were called to a home on reagan street in east san jose because the man was there holding gasoline bottles threatening to burn down a house. when police arrived, they found the man had barricaded himself in the shed in the back of the home. he was holding a woman there against her will. police started negotiating with him and the woman was able to escape but we're told that that suspect ended up lighting the shed on fire. >> it did get intense, especially once the shed started to burn. k-9s were used. some force had to be used with the individual. there was also a threat of some other weapons in the shed that we were unsure of [screaming] >> reporter: you can hear the man yelling in pain as he was loaded into the ambulance. he was taken to the hospital with minor because he was -- a taser was used on him.

he's being interviewed at the hospital by police. he will be arrested for arson and resisting arrest. we're told by police he also had some outstanding warrants. the fire damaged the shed, not the main home in front of it. it's unknown if the suspect lived there or if he knew the people that lived in the house, there were a couple of officers who suffered minor injuries. we're told they will be okay. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. well, police want to know what caused a crash that killed a man in hayward. that happened last night on strirl parkway at about 7:30. police say the man was driving erratically, changing lanes, possibly speeding when he went off the road and crashed into a light pole. now, he was not wearing a seat belt. anyone with information on the crash is asked to call police. 8:09. all over the nation, people are taking part in parades, marches and service projects, remembering dr. martin luther king, junior. this is the video of the wreath laying ceremony at the martin luther king, junior memorial in

washington, d.c. dr. king was born upon january 15th, 1929. the federal holiday is always the third monday in january. president obama and first lady michelle obama, they are taking part in a community service project in washington, d.c. in that area today. a previously unheard recording has been released of dr. ming junior being interviewed back in 1960. dr. king was asked if president- elect j.f.k. had assisted with his release from a prison in georgia. >> he was in contact with officials in georgia during my arrest and he called my wife, made a personal call and expressed his concern and said he was working and trying to do something to make my release possible. >> dr. king had been sentenced to four months of hard labor for a traffic violation two

a nevada hospital is on suicide watch. 88-year-old william dresser was taken into custody yesterday. he's accused of shooting his wife who was staying in a rehabilitation room at the hospital in carson city. no one else was hurt. the shooting comes nearly a month after another medical facility next to a reno hospital that led to the death of a doctor. new this morning, both the united states and the european union announced they suspended some of the sanctions against iran. it's in response to iran's move to stop producing 20% enriched uranium. that was a key part of iran 'nuclear deal with six world powers. in exchange, some sanctions are lifted to give negotiators a chance to work on a long-term deal. some think russia may have helped edward snowden leak classified intelligence. russia gave him asylum

afterwards. house intelligence chairman mike rogers thinks snowden was helped in stealing that information. rogers says most of the information contained details about u.s. military forces. a new global study reveals trust in government is falling around the world. the survey by public relations shirm, edelman, found only 44% of university educated people trust their government. that's down 8% from 2011 among the same group. the survey cites the budget battle in washington and europe's poor response to a debt crisis is key reasons for the decline. new accusations against new jersey governor, chris christie. dawn zimmer claims christie's lieutenant-governor threatened to withhold money from the sure storm sandy relief -- superstorm sandy relief fund if the city did not approve prime

time is 8:24. those snowstorms in ohio causing major problems. a lot of traffic jams, pour visibility and terrifying situations like skidding across

icy roads and collisions like that one. 125 snowplows are out there to help those drivers stuck in the snow and the ice. meantime, demolition crews in minneapolis will start tearing down the metrodome. the old home of the minnesota vikings. early saturday morning, they started deflating the roof of the metrodome. construction crews say the new vikings stadium should be ready in time for the 2016 nfl season, look at that deflation going on that roof. in the meantime, the team has made a deal with the university of minnesota to play their home games at their stadium. well, san francisco police were out in force during the nfc championship game. there were few problems reported after the disappointing loss. to make sure nobody set fires, trash was set up. police increased their patrols and officers were keeping an eye on the mission district. police say fan violence has

been a problem in the neighborhood. >> there's a lot of people having a good time all day long. there will always be something we have to deal with at the end of the day. >> folks police say they did arrest arrest a handful of people in fighting. a little different mood as the seahawks' fans took to the streets to sell brit their win -- celebrate their win. if you believe the las vegas oddsmakers, this year's super bowl score will be one of the closest ever. at first, the sports books were calling it a tossup. but bettors started to put their money down on the broncos. denver is the 2-point favorite to win. the experts say more people are likely to bet on this game than any other. fans are rushing to buy

residents. vineyards, agricultural businesses and fires at camp grounds are still allowed with the right permits. the agency has an extra 125 firefighters onhand in the northern region in case a fire breaks out. >> i like to think we're not gonna be busy. we'll be running more vegetation fires that we typically would run this time of year. and i urge people to be cautious. and that's probably why we implemented this burn ban. >> now, while the burn ban is new here in the north bay, it's already been in effect in several other counties, san mateo, alameda, contra costa and santa cruz counties have had a burn ban in effect since the end of december. live in petaluma, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. firefighters in los angeles still battling that wildfire. right now it's about 78% contained. they expect full containment by wednesday. so far that fire has burned more than 1900 aircrafters in the angeles -- acres in the

angeles national foretest. illegal campers started that fire. police say three men in their 20s have been arrested in connection to that fire. a devastating loss for an oakland mother after the shooting deaths of two of her sons in less than a month. police say 19-year-old lamar broussard and his friend, they were driving near 100th and longfellow avenues yesterday when two gunmen pulled up and started shooting. the victims died at the scene. just a week ago, broussard buried his brother, 13-year-old weathersby iii. he was shot to death on new year's eve blocks away from home. family members are devastated. >> now we have to deal with something like this. it's just a senseless death. our family has never dealt with death like this. oakland police believe the men killed in yesterday's shooting, they were targeted. the name of the second victim has not yet been released.

investigators are saying little about the suspects or their getaway car. meantime, oakland police still want to know who created fliers posted in an oakland neighborhood that show a city councilwoman with a swastika on her forehead. the oakland tribune reports the fliers show libby shaft and reads "stop shaft, stop the d.a.c.." that's a proposed surveillance center for the police and for firefighters. shaft told the tribune that as someone of jewish heritage, those fliers are particularly hurtful. u.s. lawmakers are expressing concerns about the security at the sochi limes threatening -- solely olympics -- sochi olympics targeting attacks. these two men posted a video claiming responsibility for the attacks. they also talk about their planser to the olympic games. now -- plans for the olympic

games. now russian leaders are responding by increasing security. >> they have moved some 30,000 armed troops down to the region. that tells you that the -- their level of concern is great. but we don't seem to be getting all the information we need to protect our athletes in the games. >> russia's president is ensuring the safety of all visitors. he talked about this at the g-8 and g-20 summits. the torch relay has just reached the city of volgograd where the suicide bombings killed more than 30 people last night. right now there is a very strong police presence in the city. officers have been scattered as the flame winds its way through the city streets. by the time the relay is done, the torch will have gone through 136 cities. we're finding out more about how much the nine months of the contract talks between b.a.r.t. and its two biggest unions

following for you. in washington, d.c., the day began with this wreath laying at the martin luther king, junior memorial. all over the nation today, people are volunteering for community service projects. it's all part of the king day holiday. president obama and michelle obama, they will be taking part in the national day of service. back here at home, a man is in custody this morning after standing outside of a san jose home and threatening to set it on fire. when police arrived, they say they found him inside of a shed behind that home with someone else. that person got away and the man set the shed on fire. police say they had to use force but they were able to arrest him. he's facing several charges now. the 49ers' their quest for a sixth super bowl victory ended right there. they will have to wait for next year. last night, the seattle seahawks beat the 49ers, 23-17 in the nfc championship game. 

this came down to the last minute. alex savidge is joining us live from outside of the 49er headquarters in santa clara and still some loyal fans are out there with you, alex. >> reporter: the die-hard are out here this morning. you can see them behind me. they are gathered outside of the team's training facility. they are greeting a lot of the players and coaches as they arrive. there will be a team meeting a few hours from now. some fans have been here a couple of hours. and they say they just want to show their appreciation for a great season, a tough loss last night. there was a huge crowd onhand even late last night as the team arrived back from seattle. [ cheers ] >> reporter: close to00 fans assembled outside of team headquarters. this was at about 11:30 last night. they erupted in applause as the team buses pulled into the training facility just back from seattle. after that frustrating 23-17 loss to the rival seahawks in

the nfc title game. as the players and coaches drove out of the facility, many waved to the crowd. even though the 49ers couldn't make it back to the super bowl, these fans are proud. looking ahead to next season. >> i think with jim harbaugh in our corner and our brand-new stadium behind us, i think maybe we can do it. i think kap is the man to lead us. >> reporter: and this morning, fans are urging the players to hold their heads up high, especially colin kaepernick who got down on himself. he threw the late pick in the enzoned that sealed the -- end zone that sealed the victory for the sea hauges. they will hold their i meeting at 11:00. after that, the players and coach harbaugh will address the media and what talk about what was a fantastic season, a great run through the playoffs that ended last night with heartbreak. live this morning in santa clara, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, kenneth bae, the american jailed in north korea, made a plea to the

u.s. we want to show you video of a press conference that bae held this morning. it was at his own request. he was arrested in november of 2012 while leading a tour group. he's accused of crimes against the state and was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. he says he's not been treated badly but the u.s. opinion is making his situation worse. this morning, he prex expressed -- expressed hope that the u.s. government will do their best for his release. amman ta knox and her former girlfriend are accused of murdering knox's girlfriend. the verdict is expected to be delivered this month in this trial. the prosecution wants each of them sentenced to 26 years in prison. amanda knox will not be present at the trial. she's refused to return to italy and attend since it began

last year. new zealand was hit with a big earthquake today. a 6.3 quake that rattled biggings, knocked out power to thousands of people. this was big enough to damage homes and trigger rockslides. and that giant eagle sculpture there from the movie the hobbit, it fell at new zealand's main airport. so far no serious injuries have been reported. 8:48 is the time. traffic could be picking up a little bit. a lot of people have the day off and might be out to enjoy this nice weather. >> it's great weather. i got a couple tweets from people saying, i have to work but i don't feel too bad. look at the roads. ten minutes from the toll plaza into san francisco. usually not that good obviously. 880 northbound and southbound, the traffic is moving well.

welcome back. san francisco police made an arrest in last night's shooting that injured two people. it happened on turk street at about 9:00 p.m. police say one person was shot in the arm. the other shot in the leg. both are expected to survive and police say they arrested the suspect about a block away on market street muni services to be diverted while police investigated. oakland police are investigating a stabbing that injured three people. that happened sometime before 10:30 last night on 19th avenue in oakland. police say three people had to be taken to the hospital. so far, no word on their condition. police have arrested one person in connection to the stabbing. right now, though, it's unclear what may have led up to that incident. 8:54. rescue teams in florida successfully rescued 25 stranded pilot whales and got them back into the gulf of mexico. those whales were stranded at a beach in naples, florida.

it happened during low tide. two of the whales were stuck on a sandbar. while all of the whales did escape, scientists say they are sick. it looks like they are not eating. >> if sick or injured, they will continue to stay with it even if it goes into a dangerous situation like the shallows like this one did. >> still not clear why the whales became sick. back in december, 30 miles away, more than 50 whales became stuck in the everglades national park waters. they were stranded in that shallow water for about a week. we did live shots over that. seven of them died. four others had to be euthanized. flu-related deaths in california may be close to matching the death toll for all of last year. the state confirmed 45 flurry- related death -- 45 flu-related deaths under the age of 65.

it's investigating another 50 deaths that may have been caused by the flu. last year, there were 106 flu deaths for the whole year. free flu shots could be the first positive of experience. the law mandates most health plans cover a set of services including shots and screening tests with no copay regardless of whether the yearly deductible has been met. president obama sharing his thoughts on marijuana. in an interview, the president said marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol. e also called smoking pot a bad habit. he told the magazine that he had smoked marijuana when he was younger but he does not encourage it. recreational marijuana is still against federal law but the obama administration has given states permission to experiments with pot regulation. a 10-year-old boy with terminal cancer is getting national attention this morning for the way he helps the
